On the 11th of April, the FHSS Portuguese Section hosted a lecture by Dr. Zerbo Freire for students in the Bachelor of Portuguese program, which was also open to the general public. A poet and translator with a master's degree in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese), Dr. Freire is currently a doctoral student in Literary and Intercultural Studies at the University of Macau. He has lived in Macau for several years and is the author of the poetry book Visão Direcção Acção (2021). As a translator, he published Quadras Chinesas (2022), along with other translations of classical Chinese poetry in the magazine Via do Meio. This year, he published Li Qingzhao: The Weight of Autumn on the Heart, the subject of his master's thesis. His lecture, “Dez Pedaços do Africano,” focused on Cape Verde, inviting the audience on a journey across this island nation while reflecting on the historical, cultural, and literary elements that have shaped the reality and imagination of its people. During the Q&A period, some of his poems, which had been discussed in the Portuguese classes, prompted several questions from students about his life and work as a poet-translator in China.
