The project "The History of Films in Haojiang: A Century of Light and Shadow Flourishing——An Investigation into Macao's Film Screening Under the Influence of War, Politics and Technology", completed by a core team of students from the Cultural Industry Program of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) of City University of Macau, stood out among more than 400,000 works from over 2,700 universities nationwide and won the National Third Prize.
It is reported that this is another national award won by teachers and students of the Cultural Industry Program in the FHSS at the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition. Earlier, the project "Reflecting the Changes of the Times and Depicting the Picture of Moderate Prosperity——Creation and Dissemination of Film and Television Works on Targeted Poverty Alleviation and Rural Revitalization in Xi Jinping's New Era", guided by teachers such as Xiao Daibo and completed by students including Lu Wu (2022 Master of Cultural Industry Management, CityU), won the National Third Prize at the 17th "Challenge Cup" in 2022.
The "Challenge Cup" Competition is known as the "Olympic Games" in the field of scientific and technological innovation for Chinese college students. With the theme of "Youth Stands Firmly for Chinese-Style Modernization", this year's competition held its final review and final at Nanjing University from October 31 to November 3. The FHSS's project gained unanimous recognition from the judging experts due to its unique regional perspective, solid historical data foundation and innovative research methods.
This award highlights the achievements of the FHSS in talent training in the field of cultural industry, and demonstrates the academic responsibility of teachers and students of the Cultural Industry Program to deepen their research on Macao's culture and serve the national strategy. In the future, the faculty will continue to encourage teachers and students to base themselves in Macao, focus on the Greater Bay Area, and face the international community, so as to serve society through academic innovation and contribute wisdom and strength to the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" and cultural inheritance in Macao!
Project Introduction
Project Name: The History of Films in Haojiang: A Century of Light and Shadow Flourishing——An Investigation into Macao's Film Screening Under the Influence of War, Politics and Technology
Supervisors: Lu Wu, Xiao Daibo
Team Members: Lu Jianchong, Cao Diwei, Qu Shengyu, Wang Boyin, Long Xu
Project Introduction: Taking Macao's century-old film screening history as the research object, the project systematically sorts out the changes in Macao's film cultural ecology under the influence of three factors—war, politics and technology—since the introduction of "shadow plays" in 1893, through a combination of field investigations, literature research and physical evidence verification. This research fills the academic gap in the study of Macao's film history and provides important historical reference for the construction of the "Cultural Bay Area" in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Award Experience
Mr. Lu Jianchong, the person in charge of the project, said: "As postgraduates majoring in Cultural Industry Management, we hope to contribute to the cultural inheritance and innovative development of Macao through this research. This honor belongs to the entire team that fought side by side with us. From the initial vague spark of creativity to countless late-night heated discussions, from repeated revisions of the plan to the calmness on the defense stage, every step embodies our sweat and wisdom. We would like to express our special thanks to the supervisors—your key guidance and continuous encouragement helped us find our way when we were confused.
Looking back on the preparation process, the most precious gains are far more than this trophy. We learned how to transform book knowledge into solutions to practical problems, how to collaborate efficiently under pressure, and how to support each other and become stronger in the face of setbacks. This process is a comprehensive tempering of our innovative spirit, practical ability and will quality.
The Challenge Cup is an end and even more a new starting point. It makes us firmly believe that if we dare to think, dare to act and dare to persist, our dreams can come true. This experience will always inspire us to continue to explore bravely and fear no challenges on the road ahead.
