On the afternoon of March 27th, the “City Cup” English Public Speaking Competition 2019 was started at Ho Yin Convention Centre, hosted by The Foreign Language Education and Research Center of City University of Macau and sponsored by Macao Foundation. There were total of 10 competitors competed for the Champion. Professor Romulo Alegre, Coordinator for the Department of English Studies of University of Saint Joseph, Pro-Rector Ip Kuai Peng, Dr Bo Hu, the director of Foreign Language Education and Research Center, Professor Priscilla Roberts from the faculty of Business attended the contest and encouraged the students to calm their minds and show their talent.
In the first part of the competition, the contestants gave a speech with the theme of "How to Change the World." The contestants expressed their opinions from different standpoints, covering idealism, realistic analysis, civilized system, etc. After the speech, the judges asked questions based on the content of each contestant's speech, and interacted with the contestants to discuss the topic in depth. In the impromptu speech session, the contestants randomly selected the order to answer the questions asked by the judges within 1 minute and 30 seconds. There was also a luck draw session which made the atmosphere of the competition so lively.
After fierce competition, He Changbo from the faculty of Finance won the champion of the contest, Li Jiahang from the faculty of Business won the first runner-up and Guo Lilin from the faculty of Finance won the second runner-up. Furthermore, Liu Songling from the faculty of Business won the most popular award, Liu Chang from the faculty of Business won the best manner award and Wang Yuanfan from the faculty of Finance won the most humorous award.
City University encourages more students to participate in such competitions in the future and to be trained in the process of constantly challenging themselves.
