[Applied Linguistics] Teachers and Students Shine Together on Academic Stage

October 26, 2025 – The three-day "Global Vision, National Sentiment" Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Foreign Languages and Translation Postgraduate Academic Exchange Week concluded successfully at the Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. This grand event brought together teachers and students from numerous universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and across the country. Among them, the special lecture by Professor Huang Guowen from the City University of Macau and the outstanding performance of Applied Linguistics doctoral student Yang Bingkun became two major highlights of this year's event.

In the Keynote session, Professor Huang Guowen, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the City University of Macau and President of the Guangdong Foreign Languages Association, delivered an inspiring academic speech titled "The Issue of 'Originality' in Academic Research." Professor Huang analyzed the connotation of academic originality from four dimensions: theoretical innovation, methodological innovation, perspectival innovation, and application innovation. He emphasized that originality does not mean starting from scratch but rather making an "incremental contribution" based on existing research findings. Professor Huang particularly pointed out that foreign language scholars should fully leverage their unique cross-cultural and cross-linguistic advantages. By adopting the perspective of the 'other' to achieve a two-way perspective and promoting academic innovation through the process of theoretical "re-contextualization," they can transition from being "knowledge consumers" to academic creators.

Regarding the paper competition, the results of the 10th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Foreign Languages and Translation Postgraduate Paper Competition were announced. Doctoral student Yang Bingkun from the City University of Macau stood out among numerous participants from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Macau University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Nanjing University, and other institutions. He won the first prize in the competition, thanks to his solid research foundation, innovative research perspective, and excellent performance during the on-site defense. This honor not only demonstrates Yang Bingkun's personal academic strength but also reflects the outstanding effectiveness of the City University of Macau in postgraduate education.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of the School of International Studies at Sun Yat-sen University, presented the first prize certificate to Yang Bingkun. This year's Exchange Week not only provided a valuable platform for academic exchange among teachers and students from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao but also, through the theoretical guidance of Professor Huang Guowen and the practical achievements of young scholars like Yang Bingkun, vividly demonstrated the deep integration of academic inheritance and innovation in the field of foreign languages and translation. The event concluded successfully in a warm academic atmosphere, injecting new vitality into promoting the development of foreign language and translation disciplines in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
