On March 11, the first session of the Postgraduate Forum on Applied Linguistics hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of City University of Macau was held smoothly. As the first regular postgraduate forum in the field of applied linguistics at the university, this event has received high attention from both the university and faculty levels since the preparation stage, with the core tenet of "Based on disciplinary characteristics, facilitating research growth, and nurturing an academic community". Centered on the theme of Early Steps in Academic Exploration: From Conference Presentations to Paper Writing and Submission, the inaugural event delivered a professional and practical academic feast for postgraduates across the university.
High-standard Preparation, Laying a Foundation for Disciplinary Exchange
Professor Liu Jun, Rector of City University of Macau, Professor Huang Guowen, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Zhang Haomin, Programme Director of the Postgraduate Programme in Applied Linguistics, and Associate Professor Zhang Yanhui, PhD Supervisor, attended the event in person and witnessed the opening of the forum together with the students present. Professor Jin Lixian, Distinguished Chair Professor of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, also sent his wishes remotely, encouraging young students to cherish time, dare to explore and make continuous breakthroughs.
At the opening session, Professor Huang Guowen delivered a speech, extending warm congratulations on the forum's opening and inspiring the students to seize the opportunity for exchange, consolidate their foundation through critical thinking and broaden their academic horizons. Professor Huang Guowen also presented certificates to the guest speakers on site in recognition of their careful preparation and enthusiastic sharing. Professor Zhang Haomin and Associate Professor Zhang Yanhui also delivered their messages one after another, encouraging the students to step out of their comfort zones, improve their research capabilities and develop independent academic thinking through exchanges, thus laying a solid foundation for their academic careers.

Yang Bingkun, a PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics, gave a special sharing session, focusing on the core issues of academic initiation and systematically explaining the entire process of conference presentation preparation, paper conception and writing, manuscript revision and polishing, as well as journal submission and publication. Addressing the common confusions of postgraduates at the initial stage of research, he put forward practical and feasible methods and suggestions combined with his own hands-on experience and academic journey. His insightful sharing won warm applause from the teachers and students present!
After the sharing, Rector Liu Jun and Professor Huang Guowen made comments respectively, highly affirming the value of peer sharing and placing high hopes on the postgraduates present. They urged everyone to take this forum as a starting point, make steady progress, dare to explore and achieve continuous new progress on the academic path!
