Program features
The Studies of Chinese Culture program at the City University of Macau is the first specialized course on Chinese cultural studies in Macau. This program adopts a global cultural perspective and employs interdisciplinary methods to study Chinese culture. First, the program emphasizes exploring the historical development, key characteristics, and core spirit of Chinese culture in the context of East-West cultural exchanges. It also examines the current state of Chinese culture in the era of globalization and explores pathways for its healthy and sustainable development. Second, the program is comprehensive, integrating disciplines such as history, philosophy, and intellectual history. It aims to cultivate well-rounded scholars with a humanistic spirit and successors to the Chinese cultural tradition.
Program Aims and Objectives
1. Comprehensive Objective: The Master’s program in the Studies of Chinese Culture is a two-year course designed to cultivate high-quality, innovative professionals with a deep understanding and unique insights into Chinese culture. Building on students’ undergraduate backgrounds in humanities (or STEM fields), the program expands and enhances their comprehensive knowledge of Chinese history, literature, institutions, customs, rituals, religion, philosophical thought, science, and technology. On this foundation, students will develop an in-depth understanding of a specific aspect of Chinese culture and acquire advanced research capabilities.
2. Comparative Thinking and Cross-Cultural Perspective: The program also focuses on cultivating students’ cross-cultural comparative thinking, intercultural communication skills, and critical analysis of sociocultural phenomena. The goal is to nurture outstanding cultural professionals who possess a deep appreciation for Chinese culture, an international cultural vision, academic expertise, and a sense of social responsibility.
Specializations
The program offers three specializations:
- Thought and Religion;
- Artifacts and Art;
- Literature and Culture.
Each specialization includes two courses. Students must choose one primary specialization and complete its two courses. Additionally, they must select one course from the remaining two specializations.
