Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Programme

Program Introduction

This is an overview map for the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Programme (MA in Applied Linguistics for short) at City University of Macau to show how the programme is designed and structured for learning. This programme emphasizes the interdisciplinary and integrated learning for students to have different choices. They are able to choose four strands for them to be more specialized in Applied Linguistics at the Masters’ level.

Program features

This Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Programme is the first postgraduate programme of its kind in Macau. This already makes it distinctive; however, the programme is designed to be innovative in other ways. These other ways make the programme unique in China.

This is a two-year graduate program which systematically integrates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It offers a broad-based course of study which allows considerable specialization and a wide variety of choice for students to construct their own pathway to follow up particular interests. Most students will have a previous background or first degree in linguistics (Chinese, English or other languages), cultural studies, or related areas, and will wish to develop solid expertise in using linguistic knowledge and skills, likely to teach English or Chinese, or to use advanced linguistic skills in employment to solve practical problems in the real world in which language plays key roles.

The program offers in-depth specialization in four strands: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), Intercultural Communication and  Teaching Languages to Young Learners.

This programme combines a range of both core courses and many optional courses to choose from. This MA is designed to help course participants to establish a strong foundation in Applied Linguistics whilst allowing them to pursue their own practical, pedagogic and research interests. Through this programme, students will be immersed an array of new ideas and engaged in developing advanced skills that they can apply in various educational and professional contexts. They will also develop an in-depth understanding of key theoretical and methodological approaches in Applied Linguistics. This provides excellent training for professional development.

Graduation Requirement

In order to complete the programme, students must complete at least the 3 Core Compulsory modules including the dissertation (16 credits), the four specialism-related strand compulsory modules (12 credits) , and the three elective modules they have chosen (9 credits). A total of 37 credits.
